Seagate HDD stops disappears on reboot but works after reinstalling: I have a Samsung SSD for my OS and a Seagate HDD for storage and non-critical apps. Issue arises when the PC sits idle, say for most of day while I'm at work. The HDD will appear explorable, but no files or programs can be accessed and I can't hear it spinning at all. EDIT: I finally had it lock up on me while in use and it appears I was wrong. The disk is still spinning. Performance monitor shows 100% active time, but no read or write, This is apparently a common indicator of disk failure that simply didn't notice before. What puzzles me now is the following. Upon a reboot, the disk will not be detected unless physically removed and remounted. chdsk and HDtune show no errors, Seatools also show the drive as healthy and, once reinstalled it can be used as normal until it stops again a day or so later. I have power management set to never let the drive sleep. Does this sound like a mechanical failure to you guys? Or just a fluke in settings? The drive is a few years old anyway and I was planning to upgrade, but I'd like to make sure my rig isn't killing it before I throw in a more expensive disk.
