"Seagate Backup Plus External HD Controller failed recover data", I've got a hd enclosure that failed. I think it was the controller, not the adapter. Anyway, I took the hard drive out, it seems to spin fine when attached via SATA internally. Though windows 8.1 shows the drive in manager, it says that two parts of it are unallocated, and one part raw. I don't want to lose data, so I don't want to format the drive. I assume that I'd be able to back up files if the controller part of the enclosure was still working. Is there a way to recover the data? Is the Seagate Backup Plus controller proprietary, or would using a Universal Drive Adapter, or another "generic" HD Enclosure, or a HD caddy/docking station, work?
